Activities and attractions to enjoy in the Napier District
Art Deco
Napier is known as the Art Deco capital of the world. Guided tours are available twice a day, or visitors can take their own self guided tours.
Art Deco style came about after the earthquake in 1931 destroyed most of the city. The style is very evident in houses and commercial premises through the area. The local council encourages the restoration and maintenance of the art deco buildings.
Every year on the third weekend in February the Art Deco Trust provides a programme to celebrate the Art Deco Style. This includes jazz concerts, vintage cars and planes, the Great Gatsby picnic.
Locals, visitors and shop staff dress up in 1920’s or 1930’s style clothing which adds to the fun of the week.
Mountain biking
The photograph of boy on bike is taken at the Esk Valley Mountain biking course. This is a well known course in NZ and offers tracks to suit varying levels of ability.
Gannet Safari
Cape Kidnappers has the largest colony of Gannets in Australasia. There are two options for those who wish to enjoy this experience. One on the back of a trailer pulled by tractor along the coast through the surf, and the second by 4WD minibus overland to the same location. The gannets arrive in October and leave in April each year.
Wine and Food
Wine production has increased dramatically over the last 10 years and the area now produces high quality red and white wines.
Many wineries offer the opportunity to enjoy a meal in a relaxed and beautiful setting.
The most prominent of these is the Mission Winery established as the first winery in New Zealand back in 1851 by the Marist Brothers.
Fruit Bowl of New Zealand
Hawke’s Bay produces huge quantities of fruit varieties. Harvesting commences early November each year, right through to April. The way to see the expanse of the Heretaunga plains, is a trip to the top of Te Mata peak.
